COMMITTEE PLANNING OFFICER REQUIRED

Our present Planning Officer is retiring from the committee at the next AGM and we are looking for someone to replace her. Duties include reviewing planning documents, writing short reports and attending planning and committee meetings.

We recognise that this post requires a certain amount of commitment and therefore are happy to accept a couple, pair of friends or partners who could manage this role together.

The committee takes a lot of interest in all planning aspects and individually inspects documents and makes comments to relieve the burden and support the planning officer.

Previous experience is not essential.

If you are interested in getting involved please email our Chairman at hajdu.clarion@talk21.com

MUSWELL HILL, HIGHGATE AND ALEXANDRA WARD ASSEMBLY MEETING

First notice that the meeting is due to be held on

Wednesday 27th June - probably in the Royal British Legion - but venue to be confirmed.

ALEXANDRA PALACE PUBLIC EXHIBITION AND FORMAL PUBLIC CONSULTATION

FUTURE USE AND REGENERATION

MAY 18TH FOR 6 WEEKS

First 3 weeks in the Palm Court

A public consultation on the proposed future uses and the draft regeneration strategy for Alexandra Palace will be held at the Palace from May 18th running for 6 weeks and will cover the whole of London.

The public's views will be requested on the plans. A specialist consultation agency will be overseeing and managing this consultation.

Full documents drawn up by Farrells are also available from the BBC Tower foyer for viewing.

This is a chance for local people to have their say on how they want to see Alexandra Palace used and developed over the coming years.

PINKHAM WAY MECHANICAL BIOLOGICAL PLANT (MBT) 2011- 2012

Proposals on the North London Waste Authority website with exhibition documents

An outline planning application from a consortium composing of Barnet Council and North London Waste Authority (NLWA) to Haringey Council is planned for this Spring. There will only be 21 days consultation after planning permission is sought by the Consortium in May.

The pre-bid consultation period organised by the Consortium was at 'exhibitions' over three days on 12th 15th and 16th of February. They leafleted some but not all of the premises within a 1 kilometre radius of the site.

The site is situated on land that was previously used as a sewage facility in the early 20th Century and has now reverted to woodland. It abuts Muswell Hill Golf Course, Hollickwood Park and parts of Sydney and Alexandra Roads.

**This site is now listed in Haringey Council's Biodiversity Action Plan as a 'Grade 1 Borough Wide Site of Importance to Nature Conservation', which means it is an important wild-life habitat. Uncommon plants such as the bee orchid and golden dock have been recorded there and bats and owls have made their homes there. The site also forms part of a green corridor that stretches from Alexandra Park through to Coppetts Wood.**

Access to this site will be via Pegasus Way, the slip road from the A406 North Circular Road, to the Friern Barnet Retail Park - then across the bridge to the next mini roundabout. Exiting vehicles go down Oriel Way.

We have concerns over the stated 560 vehicle movements a day, the 20 metre high main building, parking for 114 HGVs and cars and the planned 24 hour a day operation. One of our members, Tim Hunt, has written a precis of the proposals and a short version of this was in our newsletter. To read the full text please click here.

To view the documents presented at the exhibition and to use their feedback form please go to

A Public Meeting was planned for April so that a wider section of the community can view and discuss this plant but it did not materialise.

May: The North London Waste Plan was published for consultation. The Pinham Wood/Way site forms part of that plan. (Pinkham Wood named as Friern Barnet Sewage Works)

______________

PINKHAM WAY PLANNING APPLICATION SUBMITTED

The NLWA submitted their planning application for the Pinkham Way development to Haringey Council on 31st May 2011. Haringey say this document will be available on their planning website shortly for public responses. It may take several weeks to appear.

23 July 2011: The planning application is now 'on hold' according to Haringey Council. Haringey say they will wait until the North London Waste Plan has been approved by the Inspector next April 2012 and they want to have proper public consultations.

October 2011: Haringey's consultation on change of land designation for the Friern Barnet Sewage Works from 'employment' to 'industrial' in November 2010 has been ruled by the Independent Planning Inspectorate to be poor and the council has been forced to re-run this consulation. But they are going to go back and consult only people on their existing database. The consultation ran until 3rd November. This has now closed and received a large response.

Februay 2012: A Public Hearing was held on Wednesday 22nd February at the Haringey Council Chamber in the Civic Centre about the land redesignation to industrial of the former Friern Barnet Sewage Works, now called Pinkham Wood. The government inspector held this hearing.

Update 28th February 2012: The North London Waste Plan was submitted on Tuesday 28th February 2012 to the Secretary of State for an independent examination by an appointed inspector. The submission documents, evidence and supporting documents are available to view on the North London Waste Plan website: www.nlwp.net. The NLWP was formulated by seven London Boroughs including Haringey and Barnet under the umbrella name - the North London Waste Authority.

Update 6th May 2012: A Planning Inspector has been appointed by the Planning Inspectorate to hold a public examination to investigate the soundness of the submitted documents. This is not unfortunately, an opportunity to comment on the development itself. The Public Hearing of the North London Waste Plan (NLWP) is in June, two days of which will be dedicated to the Pinkham Wood site.

***Important Update 13th May 2012: Haringey People report that there is a Current Consultation that began on *8th May regarding an application to register the former Friern Barnet Sewage Works as a Town/Village green! 'Haringey Council wants your views on an application to register the former Friern Barnet sewage works site on Pinkham Way as a Town/Village Green'.

To have your say please visit:

www.haringey.gov.uk/haveyoursay - and look for this consultation

Further details on this astonishing development to come! This news came totally out of the blue so it is important to act swiftly and make your comment as the consultation started 6 days ago!

HARINGEY NEW WASTE COLLECTION PLANS FOR 2012

New Arrangements for fortnightly rubbish collections notified on 10th December 2011

The date for instatement of these new arrangements has been put back to MARCH 2012 and the areas for the first phase of this scheme have been extended to include MUSWELL HILL, HIGHGATE, FORTIS GREEN, parts of CROUCH END, STROUD GREEN AND BOUNDS GREEN.

Haringey say that all households affected will receive a letter before the changeover begins. They also say they will be listening to people's concerns over the next two months.

  • Fortnightly domestic wheelie bin collections with existing wheelie bins
  • Weekly recycling collection of dry and non-food items with bigger 240 litre wheelie bins to replace the green boxes or 120 litre bins on request.
  • Weekly food recycling collection
  • Hessian bags for green waste
  • No change for collections from flats, estates and homes above shops
  • Haringey say fly tipping will be cleared within six hours of being reported

Phase 2 will begin in June and will include Wood Green, Crouch End, West Green, Bruce Grove, Harringay, St Ann's and White Hart Lane. Phase 3 begins in October and will include Tottenham, Seven Sisters and Northumberland Park.

Where there are difficulties such as several flats in houses with a small garden, the council says it will work with its waste contractors Veolia, to find a solution.

Veolia will also be operating the two Reuse and Recycling centres and will take over responsibility for gritting roads and clearing graffiti. They will also operate street sweeping service in 8 'village' zones

Contact number: 020 8885 7700 or email: enquiries.haringey@veolia.co.uk

*SAFETY NOTICE: OVER THE COMING WEEKS VEOLIA STAFF WILL BE OUT AND ABOUT ANSWERING QUESTIONS. THEY WILL CARRY PHOTO ID AND WILL NEVER ASK TO ENTER YOUR HOME.

RECYCLING SMALL ELECTRICAL APPLIANCES

Haringey Council has provided WEEE banks where you can recycle small electrical items, either broken or no longer wanted. As long as they fit in the bin and are between 28cm (11 inches) by 23cms (9 inches) they will be taken.

Items include hairdryers, electrical chargers, kettles, shavers, VCRs, irons, phones, radios and CD players, remote controls, small electrical DIY tools.

Our local WEEE bank is sited at

Colney Hatch Lane N10 1QE

**Larger items like washing machines and fridges must not be left by the side of the bank but taken to one of the Recycling Centres in High Street Hornsey or Park View Road. These sites are listed under Recycling on our Haringey Services page:

MUSWELL HILL SUSTAINABILITY GROUP

The Muswell Hill Sustainability Group, founded two years ago as a result of one of our Association meetings on green issues, has helped Haringey Council to win funding of up to four hundred thousand pounds so that Muswell Hill may become a Low Carbon Zone (LCZ). The bid was developed in conjunction with the group's partners including Marks and Spencer, British Gas, Groundwork and the London Sustainability Exchange. Muswell Hill is one of only 10 neighbourhoods in London to be given this funding by Mayor Boris Johnson.

The plan is to use a wide range of measures to help people cut carbon and reduce emissions of some of London's oldest buildings. Haringey's bid is innovative in that it takes a 'whole community' approach to carbon reduction and looks at new ways to finance renewable energy technologies in local areas. The Council's environment team will aim to install photovoltaic panels on large roof spaces such as schools and businesses, which can then be used to produce power for local buildings. Community infrastructure such as the local library, will be made examples of low carbon energy use. The Muswell Hill project will involve more than 1,000 buildings, including private houses, Homes for Haringey blocks, about 30 businesses and three schools. Additional measures will include advice for residents in Conservation Areas, promotion of home energy assessments and energy efficiency measures and Sustainability Advisors to door-knock LCZ residents to raise awareness.

The Muswell Hill Sustainability Group is keen to recruit any local residents who want to improve their green credentials. Contact Alan Morton on homes@twyave.demon.co.uk or drop a note into 76 Twyford Avenue, N2 9NN.

FRONT GARDENS - SCRUTINY

April 2007: As a result of a scrutiny , Haringey Council are now trying to clamp down on crossovers to paved over front gardens and have new powers to refuse applications for them in all areas including Controlled Parking Zones. Residents will also have to prove there is a parking strip of at least 4.8m long in their forecourts.

FRONT GARDEN DESIGN FROM THE RHS

If you would like some free advice about designing your front garden for optimum effect, to save wildlife and the environment and at the same time provide the amenities you need, why not visit the Royal Horticultural Society's website at www.rhs.org.uk - and select learning and research. This section deals with how to design your front garden for cars as well as plants.

THE PUBLIC LIBRARY IN QUEEN'S AVENUE CELEBRATED ITS 80TH ANNIVERSARY ON 15TH OCTOBER 2011

NEW VALLANCE ROAD CONSERVATION AREA CREATED

Long standing member, Andrew Walker of Vallance Road, is delighted that a new conservation area was designated by Haringey's Planning Committee on November 10th 2008. It was through his efforts that this process has lead to a lot of Arts and Crafts style houses being included in our conservation areas.

The new designated roads in the Vallance Road CA (no.29) are:

Vallance, Elgin, Talbot and Grosvenor Roads. Parts of The Avenue, Grove Avenue and Lansdowne Road, which were previously excluded from the present conservation area. Also Alexandra Park Road, Thirlmere, Grasmere and Windermere roads.

We hope that this action will protect these roads from inappropriate development in the future. Many fine Edwardian and Arts and Crafts style houses are to be seen in these areas. Our Association has supported this designation with backing from the Alexandra Residents' Association and the Alexandra Park and Palace Conservation Area Advisory Committee.

GREEN GROUP NEEDED FOR PARKLAND WALK

Volunteers are needed to join a green group for the Parkland Walk in conjunction with the British Trust for Conservation Volunteers.
