MUSWELL HILL LIBRARY REPAIRS AND RE-DEVELOPMENT

Main Lending Library on Queen 's Avenue N10

MARCH 2010: The children's library o the 1st floor is newly painted and new toilets and basins have been fitted. The 70 year old mural in the children's library has been cleaned and restored. New lights are soon to be installed and this section should re-open on 15th March.

SEPTEMBER 2009: Roof repairs are complete and work has started on the first floor and toilets. Plans for development of the land at the rear of the building have been shelved.

JULY 2009: At last repairs are being carried out to the roof.

MAY 2009: The Muswell Hill Assembly on 19th May reported on current plans to repair the roof and plaster and re-paint the inside walls. This work should commence within the next few months.

JANUARY 2009: Information received at the December Area Assembly was that repairs to the roof, parapets and rooflights will go ahead in January, subject to listed building consent. Internal works will follow, including plastering and decoration. The first floor and lavatories will be closed for a while.

OCTOBER 18th 2008: There has been a promise from Haringey Council to repair the roof in the next four weeks.

AUGUST 2008: Haringey's Cabinet Committee have deferred the promised refurbishment of the library until 2009/2010. The roof is in very urgent need of repair and the building is deteriorating.

JUNE 2008: Architects have been commissioned by Haringey to devise development options for the site behind the library and apply for planning permission. It is hoped that the site with planning permission for houses will attract more interest from investors. All proceeds from this development site will be used to refurbish and modernise the library.

OCTOBER 2007: Plans for a restaurant have been shelved but the rear car park will be sold to a developer and planning will be sought to build houses on it. The building is in urgent need of repair.

BT CABINETS - BROADBAND NEWS

Muswell Hill's brief role as BT's trial area for superfast broadband has encountered a hitch with Haringey Council's refusal to grant permission for nearly all of the new cabinets they installed in the conservation area. This follows a number of objections from individuals as well as this Association. Although we welcome the faster broadband trial it was important to point out the downsides and we have now received a letter from BT stating that although the matter is being dealt with by the Council, it is open to requests to relocate cabinets.

The main areas covered In our objection included the size of the cabinets, which are taller and wider than normal and have attracted graffiti already. Some have been positioned in a way that causes pavement obstruction, blocking the use of car doors and resulted in lines of cabinets without any attempt to rationalise them. BT legitimately installed them and sought retrospective planning permission.

LANGTON CLOCK IN MUSWELL HILL BROADWAY 2008

Langtons Clock mid pictureOUR DIAMOND JUBILEE PROJECT

This handsome and decorative clock has been part of the Broadway street furniture and a famous landmark since the beginning of the 20th Century. It was put up in 1899 by E.W. Langton's the jewellers shortly after they established a branch of their watch and clock-making shop at 3, Princes Parade, which itself was laid out and built in 1898 by the well known Edmondson family. It was considered to be the most attractive and accurate time piece in the area as well as an essential service to shoppers.

Initially, the mechanism was wound regularly by hand, but in the 1950's the clock mechanism was changed to electric operation. When Langton's left the premises more than ten years ago, the clock stopped working and has not been working since. We believe that the original mechanical movement was sold when the premises changed hands.

In order to repair and restore the clock to its pristine condition, it was taken down and transported to a local clock maker. September 2008: Clock expert John Kendall of Fortis Green began restoring the clock. The upstand and both dials were treated with gold leaf, a very intensive and laborious process. The Langton insert was handpainted gold and blue and the fittings and fixings on the drum for the dials were completed. November 2008: The clock was waterproofed but still needed another coat of paint. It will be connected up to a master controller, which will pick up GPS time signals and it went through a test run. EDF visited to assess the procedure needed for mounting the clock in its brackets. Plenty of interest in the clock came from members and passers-by calling into the shop to admire it. We give him all our thanks and appreciation for his wonderful workmanship.

9th May 2009: Langton Clock re-instated

Langton clock restored

The Muswell Hill and Fortis Green Association is proud to announce that our Jubilee project, the restoration of the Langton clock, has been completed and the clock has been returned to its original position.

This jewel of the Broadway is telling the time again after many years.

MUSWELL HILL SUSTAINABILITY GROUP

The Muswell Hill Sustainability Group, founded two years ago as a result of one of our Association meetings on green issues, has helped Haringey Council to win funding of up to four hundred thousand pounds so that Muswell Hill may become a Low Carbon Zone (LCZ). The bid was developed in conjunction with the group's partners including Marks and Spencer, British Gas, Groundwork and the London Sustainability Exchange. Muswell Hill is one of only 10 neighbourhoods in London to be given this funding by Mayor Boris Johnson.

The plan is to use a wide range of measures to help people cut carbon and reduce emissions of some of London's oldest buildings. Haringey's bid is innovative in that it takes a 'whole community' approach to carbon reduction and looks at new ways to finance renewable energy technologies in local areas. The Council's environment team will aim to install photovoltaic panels on large roof spaces such as schools and businesses, which can then be used to produce power for local buildings. Community infrastructure such as the local library, will be made examples of low carbon energy use. The Muswell Hill project will involve more than 1,000 buildings, including private houses, Homes for Haringey blocks, about 30 businesses and three schools. Additional measures will include advice for residents in Conservation Areas, promotion of home energy assessments and energy efficiency measures and Sustainability Advisors to door-knock LCZ residents to raise awareness.

The Muswell Hill Sustainability Group is keen to recruit any local residents who want to improve their green credentials. Contact Alan Morton on homes@twyave.demon.co.uk or drop a note into 76 Twyford Avenue, N2 9NN.

FRONT GARDENS - SCRUTINY

April 2007: As a result of a scrunity , Haringey Council are now trying to clamp down on crossovers to paved over front gardens and have new powers to refuse applications for them in all areas including Controlled Parking Zones. Residents will also have to prove there is a parking strip of at least 4.8m long in their forecourts.

NEW VALLANCE ROAD CONSERVATION AREA CREATED

Long standing member, Andrew Walker of Vallance Road, is delighted that a new conservation area was designated by Haringey's Planning Committee on November 10th 2008. It was through his efforts that this process has lead to a lot of Arts and Crafts style houses being included in our conservation areas.

The new designated roads in the Vallance Road CA (no.29) are:

Vallance, Elgin, Talbot and Grosvenor Roads. Parts of The Avenue, Grove Avenue and Lansdowne Road, which were previously excluded from the present conservation area. Also Alexandra Park Road, Thirlmere, Grasmere and Windermere roads.

We hope that this action will protect these roads from inappropriate development in the future. Many fine Edwardian and Arts and Crafts style houses are to be seen in these areas. Our Association has supported this designation with backing from the Alexandra Residents' Association and the Alexandra Park and Palace Conservation Area Advisory Committee.

GREEN GROUP NEEDED FOR PARKLAND WALK

Volunteers are needed to join a green group for the Parkland Walk in conjunction with the British Trust for Conservation Volunteers. It should only involve general cleaning and light pruning, perhaps only twice a year. BCTV will provide tools. Please ring Dawn Miles on 8444 6552 for more information.

Situated at the top of The Avenue, Muswell Hill, N10, it is a registered charity and has been run successfully over the past 20 years by its trustees.

The lease for this building expires in March 2011 and the old trustees are stepping down and the search is on for new ones. At the moment CUFOS has many volunteers involved in play groups and toddler groups who are keen to build up a large team of interested people to ensure that CUFOS remains open as a local community centre.
