ALEXANDRA PALACE DEVELOPER WITHDRAWS

20TH AUGUST 2008

The Alexandra Palace Charitable Trust has received notification from Firoka Ltd that they are no longer interested in being involved in the future of Alexandra Palace. This comes after over a year of negotiations between the two parties.

The Chair of the Trustees, Matt Cooke, said he was determined that the Trust will grasp the opportunity that this now gives them to explore new ways of realising their objective of securing Ally Pally's future in an exciting and sustainable way. He added that the Trustees will now focus on reviewing various options open to them in order to ensure that the charitable objectives of public resort and recreation are maintained.

The trading company that runs Alexandra Palace has been reinvigorated with the appointment of a new Managing Director.

LANGTONS CLOCK IN MUSWELL HILL BROADWAY

Langtons Clock mid pictureOUR DIAMOND JUBILEE PROJECT

This handsome and decorative clock has been part of the Broadway street furniture and a famous landmark since the beginning of the 20th Century. It was put up in 1899 by E.W. Langton's the jewellers shortly after they established a branch of their watch and clock-making shop at 3, Princes Parade, which itself was laid out and built in 1898 by the well known Edmondson family. It was considered to be the most attractive and accurate time piece in the area as well as an essential service to shoppers.

Initially, the mechanism was wound regularly by hand, but in the 1950's the clock mechanism was changed to electric operation. When Langton's left the premises more than ten years ago, the clock stopped working and has not been working since. We believe that the original mechanical movement was sold when the premises changed hands.

This clock has been a well-known and much-loved feature of Muswell Hill for over one hundred years, and it is the wish and hope of our Association that it should again be in full working order to the benefit and enjoyment of all local shoppers and residents, present and future.

In order to repair and restore the clock to its pristine condition, it has been taken down and transported to a local clock maker. Once the repair work has been done, including new brackets, the clock will be put back in the same position. September 2008 update: Clock expert John Kendall of Fortis Green is restoring the clock. The upstand and both dials have now been treated with gold leaf, a very intensive and laborious process. The Langton insert is handpainted gold and blue and the fittings and fixings on the drum for the dials are complete. November 2008 update: The clock has been waterproofed but still has a coat of paint to be applied. It is connected up to a master controller, which will pick up GPS time signals and its been through a test run. EDF will visit soon to assess the procedure needed for mounting the clock in its brackets. Plenty of interest in the clock has come from members and passers by calling into the shop to admire it. We give him all our thanks and appreciation for his wonderful workmanship.

Any offers of funding assistance would be gratefully received as this is a very expensive operation. This Association has made a donation to the project. Assistance is coming from Haringey Council.

 MUSWELL HILL LIBRARY RE-DEVELOPMENT

Main Lending Library on Queen 's Avenue N10

OCTOBER 18TH 2008 update: There has been a promise from Haringey Council to repair the roof in the next four weeks.

AUGUST 2008 update: Haringey's Cabinet Committee have deferred the promised refurbishment of the library until 2009/2010. The roof is in very urgent need of repair and the building is deteriorating.

JUNE 2008 update: Architects have been commissioned by Haringey to devise development options for the site behind the library and apply for planning permission. It is hoped that the site with planning permission for houses will attract more interest from investors. All proceeds from this development site will be used to refurbish and modernise the library.

OCTOBER 2007 update: Plans for a restaurant have been shelved but the rear car park will be sold to a developer and planning will be sought to build houses on it. The building is in urgent need of repair.
